June 5, 2009

As most know, Chuck and I celebrated our 45th Wedding Anniversary with a trip to the NC Mountains.   We were married in the Chapel of Capitol St. United Methodist Church in Jackson, MS where my family had been attending church for years.   That day is a bit of a blur to me because of all the excitement and our pictures turned out the same unfortunately.   We were very young and very poor and pretty naive about what a marriage entailed, but we were in love and nobody  could convince us to wait to get married.

Our path for the last 45 five years has been a bit like the road that led up the mountain to our getaway cabin this weekend.  The road was windy and full of deep holes that you had to either swerve around or slowly go through.  It also was straight up and we were warned that you had to keep moving once you started to ascend.  If you stopped to watch the surroundings you may loose your momentum and not make it to the top.

Marriage is a covenant made between you and your love before God. I have found that when the deep holes in the path appear  or bridges are washed away or the incline is so steep you feel you are so tired you can't keep going, that covenant commitment can be like a glue that can keep you together.

You will have many more times, hopefully, of the good memories and refreshing times that kindle that fire between you. When the hard times come they can even strengthen or tear apart your relationship.  When we started up the path this weekend the rain had washed away a lot of the smooth gravel road.  It had even washed away the bridge earlier leaving some former guests stranded on the mountain.  But we stayed in the car together and Chuck maneuvered the car around most of the holes and soft mud and crossed the new bridge as we slowly made the steep incline until we reached our destination.

The view from the end of the road on the porches of the getaway house were wonderful. They soon made you forget the hardship of the road to get there.

The air was cool and the wind blowing through the trees sounded like a waterfall. The sound was so distinct that I was sure there must be water flowing nearby.  However, we went exploring through the woods and found no waterfall.  We came out with our own walking sticks and Chuck whittled them down to make them look like we were real trail hiking mountain folk.  Not!

The cabin was really nice and would make a good getaway, but was not conducive to romance.   Everywhere you looked you could see through large windows to observe the woods or the mountains.  However, there were no curtains on any of the windows so there was absolutely no privacy and there was another couple staying in the basement apt.

We managed to have a good Anniversary anyway because we still love each other very much. I have come to know that Chuck was a gift from God to me and I am very blessed.  Since there is not a large selection of places to eat in Moravian Falls we took steaks and the fixings and enjoyed a good meal and good company together.

The trip up this mountain trail was significant to what is going on in our lives right now and we feel we are about to pass over a new bridge.  We went to this place with expectation of the Lord giving us revelation as to what is next for us. I will share more about our journey soon.
